about Square Water Hole
Mount Compass Estate is nestled in the heart of the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula. The unique topography of this region is sudden in its contrast. Shaped by glacial action, it is characterized by undulating hills and flat valleys of rich peat soils.
The vineyard is planted on the site historically known as the "Square Waterhole" and it used to be the original stage coach stop between Victor Harbor and Adelaide. In most recent years, it was run as a dairy and was renowned for its green pastures and produce.
The site lies 280 meters above sea level, a cool climate area with ample winter rainfall, but generally dry cool summers. All of the wines reflect the cool climate influence of the region. The whites are crisp exhibiting fresh citrus and passionfruit characters. The reds are elegant exhibiting mainly berry flavors of blackcurrant, mulberries, blueberries, strawberries and cherries.
The slow long ripening period preserves the fruitiness of the white varieties and provides smooth soft tannin for the reds.
